This book contains selected papers which were presentedduring the Colloquium on Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics,held in honour of the 60th birthday of Yu.V. Prokhorov, in Bakuriani,Georgia, 24 February--4 March 1990. The scientific thinking of Prokhorovis characterized by his ability to find and clearly state naturalproblems of probability and statistics and to search for new approachesand methods for solving them.
The papers in this volume reflect the progress in probability andstatistics in the (former) USSR during recent years and the developmentof Prokhorov's ideas.
