Text
Headings and subheadings for different sections of the paper (e.g.Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion) should be clearlyindicated. Detailed mathematical discussion should be placed in anappendix. Units of measurement, abbreviations and symbols shouldfollow the international system of units (SI). Equations and formulaeshould be typewritten wherever possible. Equations should be numberedconsecutively with arabic numerals in parentheses on the right-handside of the page. Special symbols should be identified in the margin.Avoid confusion between 0 (zero), o (the letter); 1 (the number), l(the letter), a, alpha; k, kappa; p, rho; u, mu; v, nu; n, eta;epsilon, ``is an element of''; etc.
Tables and figures
Tables should be given short informative titles and should benumbered consecutively in arabic numerals. Tables may be reproducedby photo-offset, i.e. directly from the typed manuscript. Figures ina form suitable for reproduction should be submitted separately fromthe text as original drawings, or laser prints, or as high contrast, sharp unmounted photographs on glossy paper. Lettering on figuresshould be proportional to the size of the figure to ensure legibilityafter reduction. On the back of each figure should be indicatedlightly in soft pencil: (1) the top of the figure by an arrow, (2)the author and figure number. All figures and tables should be citedconsecutively in the text and a list of short captions should beprovided at the end of the paper.
References
The Harvard system should be used for the references. In this system, names and dates are given in the body of the text and an alphabeticallist of references at the end of the manuscript. References in thetext should give the author's surname with the year of publication inparentheses. When reference is made to a work by two authors, bothnames should be given; references to works by more than two authorsshould give the name of the first author, followed by et al.,e.g. Smith et al. (1973). If several papers by the sameauthor(s) in the same year are cited, a, b, c, etc. should be placedafter the year of publication, e.g. Smith and Jones (1982a, b).
List of references
References to articles from journals should give in this order:name(s) of author(s), year or publication in parentheses, full titleof the article, title of the periodical, volume number, first andlast relevant page numbers, e.g.
Bergen, J.R. and Julesz, B. (1983). Parallel versus serial processingin rapid pattern discrimination. Nature 303, 696--698.
References to articles from books (or to whole books) should give inthis order: name(s) of author(s), year or publication in parentheses, full title of the article, title of the book (volume number ifapplicable), initials followed by name(s) of the editor(s), name andlocation of the publisher, first and last relevant page numbers, e.g.
Guzmán, A. (1969). Decomposition of a visual scene intothree-dimensional bodies. In: Automatic Interpretation andClassification of Images. A. Grasselli (Ed.). Academic Press, NewYork, pp. 243--276.
If a publication is in press the reference should be made as completeas possible, stating the name of the journal and adding ``in press''.The list of references should be typed with triple spacing, and inalphabetical order of the first author's name. When a number ofpublications by the same author are cited the order should be (1)single-author references in date order, (2) two-author references inalphabetical order of the second author, and (3) et al.references in date order.
Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the nominated author to check typesettingaccuracy. No changes to the original manuscript are accepted at thisstage. Proofs should be returned within two days of receipt.
Offprints
Twenty-five offprints and a password-protected PDF-file willbe supplied with each article for personal use, free of charge.Additional offprints may be ordered at prices shown on the order form, which will be sent to the author together with the proofs.
There is no page charge.
Word-processor disks
The publisher's production department can use your word-processordisks. If available, please send a copy of the disk with your finalrevised manuscript (together with two copies of the printout). Thisgives a substantial decrease in typesetting time and ensures thatthere are no re-keying errors in the article. Moreover, usingword-processor disks helps us to shorten publication times. If youprovide a disk, please follow these instructions:
1. Label the disk with the author's name; the word processor/computerused (e.g., IBM-PC, Macintosh); the name of the program (e.g.,WordPerfect, TEX, MS-Word). If you have an editor's manuscriptnumber, include it in the label.; 2. Send the manuscript as threefiles; if possible keep the text, figure legends, and tables inseparate files. File names must clearly indicate the content of eachfile; 3. Send separate disks if you submit more than one article atthe time; 4. A hard copy printout of the manuscript that exactlymatches the disk files must be supplied. Special characters andsymbols which are not included in the printer used, should be left asblank spaces in the files and these should be correctly written inthe printout in red; 5. Do not use footnotes; 6. Do not justify theright-hand margin.
