Text
Headings and subheadings for different sections of the paper (e.g.
Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion) should be clearly
indicated. Detailed mathematical discussion should be placed in an
appendix. Units of measurement, abbreviations and symbols should
follow the international system of units (SI). Equations and formulae
should be typewritten wherever possible. Equations should be numbered
consecutively with arabic numerals in parentheses on the right-hand
side of the page. Special symbols should be identified in the margin.
Avoid confusion between 0 (zero), o (the letter); 1 (the number), l
(the letter), a, alpha; k, kappa; p, rho; u, mu; v, nu; n, eta;
epsilon, ``is an element of''; etc.
Tables and figures
Tables should be given short informative titles and should be
numbered consecutively in arabic numerals. Tables may be reproduced
by photo-offset, i.e. directly from the typed manuscript. Figures in
a form suitable for reproduction should be submitted separately from
the text as original drawings, or laser prints, or as high contrast,
sharp unmounted photographs on glossy paper. Lettering on figures
should be proportional to the size of the figure to ensure legibility
after reduction. On the back of each figure should be indicated
lightly in soft pencil: (1) the top of the figure by an arrow, (2)
the author and figure number. All figures and tables should be cited
consecutively in the text and a list of short captions should be
provided at the end of the paper.
References
The Harvard system should be used for the references. In this system,
names and dates are given in the body of the text and an alphabetical
list of references at the end of the manuscript. References in the
text should give the author's surname with the year of publication in
parentheses. When reference is made to a work by two authors, both
names should be given; references to works by more than two authors
should give the name of the first author, followed by et al.,
e.g. Smith et al. (1973). If several papers by the same
author(s) in the same year are cited, a, b, c, etc. should be placed
after the year of publication, e.g. Smith and Jones (1982a, b).
List of references
References to articles from journals should give in this order:
name(s) of author(s), year or publication in parentheses, full title
of the article, title of the periodical, volume number, first and
last relevant page numbers, e.g.
Bergen, J.R. and Julesz, B. (1983). Parallel versus serial processing in rapid pattern discrimination. Nature 303, 696--698.
References to articles from books (or to whole books) should give in this order: name(s) of author(s), year or publication in parentheses, full title of the article, title of the book (volume number if applicable), initials followed by name(s) of the editor(s), name and location of the publisher, first and last relevant page numbers, e.g.
Guzmán, A. (1969). Decomposition of a visual scene into three-dimensional bodies. In: Automatic Interpretation and Classification of Images. A. Grasselli (Ed.). Academic Press, New York, pp. 243--276.
If a publication is in press the reference should be made as complete as possible, stating the name of the journal and adding ``in press''. The list of references should be typed with triple spacing, and in alphabetical order of the first author's name. When a number of publications by the same author are cited the order should be (1) single-author references in date order, (2) two-author references in alphabetical order of the second author, and (3) et al. references in date order.
Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the nominated author to check typesetting
accuracy. No changes to the original manuscript are accepted at this
stage. Proofs should be returned within two days of receipt.
Reprints
Twenty-five reprints will be supplied free of charge with each
article. Additional reprints may be ordered at prices shown on the
reprint order form, which will be sent to the author together with
the proofs.
There is no page charge.
Word-processor disks
The publisher's production department can use your word-processor
disks. If available, please send a copy of the disk with your final
revised manuscript (together with two copies of the printout). This
gives a substantial decrease in typesetting time and ensures that
there are no re-keying errors in the article. Moreover, using
word-processor disks helps us to shorten publication times. If you
provide a disk, please follow these instructions:
1. Label the disk with the author's name; the word processor/computer used (e.g., IBM-PC, Macintosh); the name of the program (e.g., WordPerfect, TEX, MS-Word). If you have an editor's manuscript number, include it in the label.; 2. Send the manuscript as three files; if possible keep the text, figure legends, and tables in separate files. File names must clearly indicate the content of each file; 3. Send separate disks if you submit more than one article at the time; 4. A hard copy printout of the manuscript that exactly matches the disk files must be supplied. Special characters and symbols which are not included in the printer used, should be left as blank spaces in the files and these should be correctly written in the printout in red; 5. Do not use footnotes; 6. Do not justify the right-hand margin.
