Instructions to Authors

General
All manuscripts are subject to editorial review. Manuscripts that havebeen published or of which substantial portions have been publishedelsewhere will not be accepted. It is the author's responsibility toobtain permission to reproduce illustrations, tables, etc. from otherpublications. Copyright of the article should be transferred to thepublisher.

Articles submitted by e-mail are welcome. Please send the manuscript asattachment to the Editor-in-Chief: j.j.a.janssen@bwk.tue.nl.The manuscript should be dividedinto separate files: text, line drawings, other figures, figure legends,tables, references, etc. Alternatively send your manuscript by airmail,in triplicate (one original plus two copies, each including allillustrations) to the Editor-in-Chief: Dr. Jules J. Form of manuscript
Manuscripts should be typewritten, double-spaced throughout, andsingle-sided on A4 (or 8.5 x 11'') paper with 2.5 cm (1'') margins onall sides. All manuscript pages should be numbered consecutively. Thefirst page of an article should contain: 1) title of article, 2) name(s)of author(s), full address(es) of university or insitution, 3)abbreviated title of the article (not exceeding 40 characters, includingspaces), 4) the name, full address, e-mail address and telephone/faxnumbers of the author to whom correspondence and proofs should be sent,and 5) any footnotes. An abstract, not exceeding 250 words and 4-8keywords should follow the title page on a separate sheet. Tables,figure legends and footnotes should be typed on separate sheets.

Abbreviations
Abbreviations of units of measurement, biological terms, chemical namesand other technical terms in the body of the paper should be used afterthey are defined clearly in the place they first appear in the text.Abbreviations which would be readily recognized by scientists outsidethe author's field, may be used without definition.

Tables and Figures
Tables should only include essential data, needed to support importantpoints in the text. Each table should be typed on a separate sheet andmust have explanatory material. All tables should be referred to in thetext and their appropriate position should be indicated in the margin ofthe manuscript.

All figures should be appropriately lettered and labelled with lettersand numbers, which will be at least 1.5 mm high in the finalreproduction. Note the conventions for abbreviations used in thejournal, so that usage in illustration and text is consistent. Allfigures should be referred to in the text and numbered consecutively(Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc.). The figures must be identified on the reverseside with the author's name, the figure number and orientation of thefigure (top and bottom). The preferred location of the figures should beindicated in the margin of the manuscript. Illustrations that aresubstandard will be returned, thus delaying publication. Colourillustrations may be published at the author's expense.

Line drawings and graphics
Original artwork of high quality, glossy prints mounted on appropriatemounting cards should be submitted for reproduction. Lines must be darkand sharply drawn. Solid black and white or bold designs should be usedfor histograms. Xerox and other copying means may be used for the tworeview copies of the manuscript.

Continuous-tone prints
Three sets of continuous-tone prints must be submitted. One set forreproduction should be mounted on appropriate mounting cards. The setsfor reviewers may be unmounted prints. The continuous-tone prints shouldbe submitted preferably at the exact magnification, which is to be usedin the published paper and trimmed to conform the page size (195 x 128mm). Press-on numbers should be applied to the lower right-hand cornerof individual prints. Letters (a, b, c, etc.) should be used formultiple parts of a single figure. If important structures will becovered by use of the lower right-hand corner, identification may beapplied in the lower left-hand corner.

Figure legends
A title and an explanatory legend should accompany each figure. Legendsfor several figures should be typed on one sheet of paper. Sufficientdetail should be given in the legend to make it intelligible withoutreference to the text.

References
References should be cited in the text at the appropriate place bynumbers in square brackets. All references cited in the text should belisted at the end of the paper on a separate sheet, numberedconsecutively. Examples:

Word Processor disks
The publisher's production department welcomes word-processor disks. Ifavailable, please send a copy of the disk with your final revisedmanuscript (together with two identical copies of the printout). Thisgives a substantial decrease in typesetting time and ensures that thereare no re-keying errors in the article. Moreover, using word-processordisks helps us to shorten publication times. When providing a disk,please follow these instructions: 1. Label the disk with the author'sname; the word-processor/computer used (e.g. IBM-PC, Macintosh); thename of the program (e.g. WordPerfect, TEX, MS-Word, etc.). If you havean editor's manuscript number, please include it in the label; 2. Sendthe manuscript as three files: if possible, keep the text, figurelegends and tables in separate files. File names must clearly indicatethe content of each file; 3. Send separate disks if you submit more thanone article at the time; 4. Special characters and symbols that are notincluded in the printer used, should be left as blank spaces in thefiles and these should be correctly written in the printout in red; 5.Do not use footnotes; 6. Do not justify the right-hand margin. 7.Figures should be submitted in .tif or .eps format.

A galley proof will be sent to the designated author. Thefirst proofreading is the author's responsibility. Proofs should bereturned within 48 hours from the date of receipt. Manuscript,tables and illustrations will be discarded after publication,unless their return is requested when the manuscript is acceptedfor publication. Twenty-five offprints and a password-protectedPDF-file will be supplied with each article for personal use,free of charge. Additional offprints may be ordered at pricesshown on the order form, which will be sent to the authortogether with the proofs.
