Instructions to Authors

NOTICE TO CONTRIBUTORS
1. `Crustaceana' publishes papers, dealing with Crustacea, from allbranches of zoology.

2. Papers submitted must be in English, French, or German. US Englishwill be allowed for native speakers from the USA only; other authorsshould express themselves in UK English. Papers in French or Germanwill require an English translation of the title. An abstract(résumé, Zusammenfassung) of up to 300 words, both in Englishand in a different language, has to precede the main text.Translation of titles and abstracts can be provided for by theeditors.

3. Papers should, as a rule, not exceed 32 printed pages in length.If longer papers are accepted, the supernumerary pages may be charged.

4. Papers should preferably be under the responsibility of threeauthors at most. Systematic papers with more than three authors willinvariably be refused.

5. Manuscripts are to be sent in duplicate to the secretary of theEditorial Board (Dr. J.C. von Vaupel Klein, CRUSTACEANA, EditorialBoard Administrative Office, Beetslaan 32, NL-3723 DX Bilthoven, TheNetherlands, Fax: +31 71 52 74 900) or may be submitted through anyother member of the board, but definite acceptance can be executedexclusively through the office of the Secretary.

6. Manuscripts should be in their final form for printing. The textshould be concise and clear and, as a rule, contain no footnotes. Itmust be type-written on one side only of good quality white typingpaper. Double spacing between the lines and broad margins have to beused throughout the manuscript, including the lists of references andcaptions.

7. Manuscripts should contain no other indications than those foritalics, and these should be restricted to (1) scientific names ofgenera and lower categories and (2) statistical symbols. Even ifthese have already been typed in italics (which preferably should notbe the case), they are to be singly underlined by the author(s). Allother editorial indications are to be left to the editors.

8. Manuscripts refused either for lack of space or because ofinsufficient quality, will be returned by ordinary (air)mail, notregistered. Authors are thus advised to await acceptation prior toproviding the original artwork, otherwise possible loss of this willbe entirely their own responsibility. Once accepted, the availabilityof a version of the paper on floppy disk (WP 5.0 or 5.1 for DOS orWORD for Macintosh) will be appreciated.

9. Scientific names of the species category must be followed byauthor and date at least once in the main text, preferably the firsttime mentioned, and also once in every caption that states the name.In table headings mention of author only will suffice. Brackets haveto be properly placed according to the International Code ofZoological Nomenclature.

10. Units of variables should conform to the Systcme International(SI).

11. Tables may be used only if absolutely necessary but, even then,ought to be kept to a minimum. Each table must be typed on a separatesheet of paper, be provided with a concise but clear heading, and henumbered by a Roman numeral.

12. Illustrations must be in final form for printing. As a rule, theoriginal artwork will be required for that purpose. Line drawings inblack ink on good quality drawing paper or on tracing paper mountedon rigid white cardboard. Photographs and other halftoneillustrations should be produced on white glossy paper and be mountedon rigid white cardboard. For all figures goes that both letteringand mounting should be of professional quality and be provided for bythe author(s). Figures that are damaged in any way cannot beaccepted. Therefore, they ought to be packed and mailed with adequateprotection and in a flat position: not in a scroll.

13. Illustrations should preferably be prepared in such a way, thatthey all require the same reduction. Their ultimate dimensions,including the caption, should fit within the 126 tex2html_wrap_inline2720 193 mm pageformat. Reduction factors should range between 33 and 75% of theoriginal size; factors below 25% are not acceptable. Authors shouldindicate on the back of each figure or plate:

(1) reduction factor, (2) serial number(s) of the figures in Arabicnumerals, (3) their proper name(s), and (4) the short title of thepaper.

14. Captions for all illustrations should be typed together on one ormore separate sheets and should always mention the name(s) of thespecies concerned, if relevant.

15. Position of all figures and tables, as desired, must be indicatedin pencil in the margin of the main text section of the manuscript.

16. References in the text should mention author and date, e.g.,`Recent investigations (Jones, 1969)...' or `Jones (1969)remarked...'. Authors' names should not be in capitals. The use ofindications like `Ioc. cit.' etc., must be avoided.

17. References to unpublished literature (cf. International Code ofZoological Nomenclature, Article 9) should indicate that status,e.g., `Jones (unpubl.) remarked...'.

18. References cited (but only those) should be presented in extensoat the end of the paper, in alphabetical order of authors' names.Further particulars must be in accordance with the following example:

New series (n. ser.) and supplements to series (suppl.) are to betreated as series (as, e.g., series (8) in Calman, 1911a), whilesupplements to individual volumes or issues are to be treated as such(e.g., 8 (suppl.) or: 8 (1) (suppl.)). Indication of bold facenumbers for volumes of periodicals has to be left to the editors. Intitles of periodicals, if abbreviated, the abbreviations should beconsistent and clear, or conform to a standard as, e.g., the WorldList of Scientific Periodicals.

19. Authors are strongly advised to study one or more previous issuesof `Crustaceana' in order to become familiar with the requirededitorial format, prior to preparing the definite draft of theirmanuscript.

20. Authors will have to transfer the copyright of theircontributions to the Publisher.

21. Proofs are sent, as a rule, to only one of the authors. Unlessspecial conditions require otherwise, only first proofs are provided.

22. Fifty offprints and/or a password-protected PDF-filewill be supplied with each article for personal use, free of charge.Additional offprints may be ordered with the order form,which will be sent to the author together with the proofs.

23. Correspondence regarding manuscripts, proofs, and reprints shouldbe addressed to the secretary of the Editorial Board (see insidefront cover).

24. Page-charges have become an almost inevitable phenomenon forcommercially produced periodicals. Therefore, upon submitting amanuscript, all authors will receive a request for page-charges,meant to cover part of publication costs. As, however, acceptancewill be dependent upon quality rather than upon the availability ofsufficient funds, individual requests for reduction of charges willbe duly considered.

25. Page-charges for colour plates always cover the full expense ofpublication costs.
