Department of Mechanical Engineering,
Faculty of Science and Technology, Sophia University,

Manuscript style
Manuscripts must be in English, typed with double line spacing,single-sided on 8.5 x 11'' or A4 sheets, and should be numberedconsecutively, beginning with the title page. The first page of anarticle should contain only (1) the title of the paper, the name(s)and addresse(s) of the author(s), (2) a short title (running head)not exceeding 45 characters, (3) the name, full postal address aswell as telephone, fax and e-mail number of the author to whomcorrespondence and proofs should be sent. An abstract of 50--250words and 4--8 key words should be included with all manuscripts andfollow the title page on a separate sheet. When a wordprocessor isused in preparing the manuscript, a hard copy output according to theabove style must be submitted.

Headings and subheadings for different sections of the paper (e.g.Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion) should beclearly indicated. It is recommended not more than 3 hierarchicallevels of headings should be used in the main contents of thearticle. The headings should be numbered to indicate their relativeimportance, i.e. 1., 1.1., 2., 2.1., 2.1.1., etc. Abstract,Acknowledgement and Reference sections should not be numbered.Detailed mathematical discussions should be placed in an appendix.Units of measurement, abbreviations and symbols should follow theInternational System of Units (SI). Equations and formulae should betypewritten wherever possible. Equations should be numberedconsecutively with arabic numerals in parentheses on the right-handside of the page. Special symbols and Greek letters should beidentified in the margin.

Tables and Figures
Tables should be given short informative titles and should benumbered consecutively in arabic numerals. Tables may be reproducedby photo-offset, i.e. directly from the typed manuscript. Figures ina form suitable for reproduction should be submitted separately fromthe text as original drawings in India ink, or high contrast, sharp, unmounted photographs on glossy paper. Lettering on figures should beproportional to the size of the figure to ensure legibility afterreduction. On the back of each figure should be indicated lightly insoft pencil: (1) the top of the figure with an arrow, (2) the authorand the figure number. All chemical structures should be supplied asartwork suitable for direct reproduction. All figures and tablesshould be cited consecutively in the text and a list of captionsshould be provided at the end of the paper.

References and reference section
The references should be cited in a sequential manner and thereference numbers should be in square brackets. References should belisted at the end of the paper in the reference section in thenumerical order they appear in the text.

References to articles from journals should be given in this order:Reference number; full surname(s) and initial(s) of author(s); fulltitle of article; title of the journal in abbreviated from; volumenumber; year of publication in parentheses; first and last relevantpage numbers.

Example:

1. Umekawa, S., Yamamoto, J., Yamaguchi, Y. Lee, C.H. and WakashimaK., Zirconia fiber coating for improved fiber/matrix compatibility intunsten fiber reinforced stainless steel.Trans. JSCM, 11(1985), 45--52.

References to articles from books should give, in this order:reference number; full surname(s) and initial(s) of author(s); fulltitle of the article; title of the book in italic (volume number ifapplicable); name(s) of the editor(s); name and location of thepublisher; year of publication in parentheses; first and lastrelevant page numbers.

Example:

2. Otani, S. and Oya, A., Status Report on Pitch-Based Carbon Fiberin Japan, in: Composites '86: Recent Advances in Japan and theUnited States, Kawata, K. Umekawa, S. and Kobayashi, A. (eds.),Japan Society for Composite Materials, Tokyo, (1986), 1--10.

Personal communications and unpublished documents should not be cited.

Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the designated author to check typesettingaccuracy. Alterations to the original manuscript at this stage willresult in considerable delay in publication and therefore are notaccepted unless charged to the author. Proofs should be returnedwithin 3 days of receipt.

Reprints
Reprints may be ordered at prices shown on the reprint order formwhich will be sent to the author along with the proofs.

Page charge
There will be no page charges, unless the length of the paper exceeds16 printed pages.

Review articles, short communications, Letters to the Editor andselected conference/symposium papers should be presented in the samestyle as a full paper.

Word-processor disks
The publisher's production department can use your word-processordisks. If available, please send a copy of the disk with your finalrevised manuscript (together with two copies of the printout). Thisgives a substantial decrease in typesetting time and ensures thatthere are no re-keying errors in the article. Moreover, usingword-processor disks helps us to shorten publication times. If youprovide a disk, please follow these instructions:

1. Label the disk with the author's name; the word processor/computerused (e.g., IBM-PC, Macintosh); the name of the program (e.g.,WordPerfect, TEX, MS-Word). If you have an editor's manuscriptnumber, include it in the label.; 2. Send the manuscript as threefiles; if possible keep the text, figure legends, and tables inseparate files. File names must clearly indicate the content of eachfile; 3. Send separate disks if you submit more than one article atthe time; 4. A hard copy printout of the manuscript that exactlymatches the disk files must be supplied. Special characters andsymbols which are not included in the printer used, should be left asblank spaces in the files and these should be correctly written inthe printout in red; 5. Do not use footnotes; 6. Do not justify theright-hand margin.
