Treatise on Zoology
Volume 1
The Revised and Updated CRUSTACEA from the Traité de Zoologie
Editors: J. Forest and J.C. von Vaupel Klein
Editors: Advisory Editor: F.R. Schram
BRILL Academic Publishers is pleased to announce that with this edition, access to the texts of the famous Traité deZoologie is now available to a worldwide readership. Parts 1, 2, and3A of volume VII, i.e., the Crustacea, were published in Frenchin, respectively, 1994, 1996, and 1999. BRILL Academic Publishersrecognized the importance of these books and arranged for a translationto be made. However, some of the manuscripts dated from the early 1980sand it was clear from the beginning that in many fields of biology amere translation of the existing text would not suffice. Thus, allchapters have been carefully reviewed, either by the original authors orby newly attracted specialists, and adequate updates have been preparedaccordingly. As the current standard works on Crustacea in English (Th.Waterman's The Physiology of Crustacea, D.E. Bliss' TheBiology of Crustacea, and F.R. Schram's Crustacea) date backfrom the 1960s through 80s, it seems obvious that the Crustaceapublished in this Treatise on Zoology will take over as astandard reference to the biology and systematics of the group for thenext decades. The fact that the editor of the original French edition,J. Forest, could be contracted as a supervisor and editor for thecurrent series, proved to be of great advantage. Thus, with J.C. vonVaupel Klein, the principal translator, and F.R. Schram as an advisor, these three well-known scientists have edited the new version in anattempt at meeting the demands and expectations of the carcinologicalworld. We think they have succeeded.
In order to ensure availability of the new texts in an early stage, theseries is planned to comprise at least eight volumes (of approx. 400 pp.each), based on the French parts hitherto published.
