This book is the only in its kind to review the commodity coding,definitions and methodology applying to the collection of forestproducts production and trade statistics. Recommendations are made forimproving the data collection framework. The analysis -- bothqualitative as quantitative - contains valuable information for anybodywho want to gain more insight in the methodology behind the figures.
Special attention has been given to the comparability of commoditycoding systems, comparability of terms and definitions at the nationaland international levels, conversion factors to convert volume andweight, double counting and the coverage of production and trade oftropical timber and its products.
This relates to the efforts of the ECE, FAO, EUROSTAT and ITTO whojointly collect such statistics from their member states, with the aimto streamlining the collection process and to reducing the burden fortheir statistical correspondents.
Data on commercial trade of all commodities, among which forestproducts, is also collected by UN -- COMTRADE and Eurostat -- COMEXT.The possible use of their data for reporting to the joint questionnaireis used.
In the analysis of the international organisations, the scope is global.At the national level, the study concerns EU/EFTA member states.
