Tissue engineering thrives on collaboration across traditionaldisciplines, combining polymer science and drug delivery with cellbiology, immunology and surgery. A wealth of knowledge has beengained from both the materials science and the cell and molecularbiology communities in the development of new or modifiedbio-materials for implantation. Although there exists a greaterfoundation today for the development of new implantable materials fortissue engineered devices, there still remains a significant amountto learn.
The articles included in this book highlight the important advancesin polymer science that impact tissue engineering. The breadth ofpolymer science is well represented with the relevance of bothpolymer chemistry and morphology emphasized in terms of cell andtissue response. This book contains contributions from leaders in thefield that are representative of current research endeavors andshould serve to stimulate further work to move the approaches oftissue engineering with biomedical polymers closer to widespreadclinical impact.
