In the last decade the use of interstitial microwave antennasto deliver localized and controlled power to deep-seated tumors has beenexplored in institutes around the world. Simultaneously the field ofbrachytherapy also progressed as clinicians began to develop newimplantation approaches for a variety of tumor sites, thereby promotingthe insertion of catheters which could serve as conduits for theinterstitial microwave applicators.
Although the challenges presented by deep-seated tumors have not beensolved, the developments in the field of brachytherapy and theimplantation of interstitial applicators for hyperthermia are such thata volume dedicated to this approach is warranted.
This third volume in the book series Hyperthermia and Oncologyprovides insight and updated information on various aspects ofinterstitial hyperthermia. All contributions are made by experts in thefield and it will thus provide an excellent guidebook for clinicians whoare either already working in the field or who wish to implement thistreatment. This book also provides information on the basic aspects tophysicists and biologists who are interested in the field ofhyperthermic treatment.
