Proceedings of the Taniguchi Symposia on Brain Sciences Volume 8
Editors: S. Inoué and A.A. Borbély
This volume provides the first major overview, by eminentauthorities on the subject, of recent developments in the field ofendogenous substances and their regulation of sleep processes.
The first two sections discuss general aspects of sleep regulation;including an historical overview, the restorative and adaptive functionsof sleep, and evolutionary features. The third section containscontributions focusing on circadian rhythms in relation to humoralfactors, hormones, neurotransmitters and metabolism.
The sleep substances currently receiving most attention ---delta-sleep-inducing-peptide (DSIP), muramyl peptides, interleukin-1,sleep-promoting substance (SPS) and prostaglandin D2 --- areextensively discussed. Substances that may selectively modulate REMsleep are dealt with in the final secion.
Endogenous Sleep Substances and Sleep Regulation will be ofinterest to those involved in both basic and clinical research in sleep, the neurosciences, pharmacology and psychiatry.
