This volume presents the results of a comprehensive project on thepetroleum geology of Northwest China undertaken by the Bureau ofResources and Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, which aimed atreviewing the Phanerozoic stratigraphy, palaeogeography and platetectonics of the region. This region, which has considerable economicpotential as a source of petroleum, gas and minerals, has been for someyears the scene of intense activity by exploration geologists andprovincial geological surveys. A vast reservoir of information onstratigraphy, palaeontology, tectonics and geochemistry produced bythese workers was consulted for incorporation in the present book, andtheir reports, often written in Chinese and not formally published,contain data that are now summarised or listed in English for the firsttime.
