Ecological Aspects of Polymer Flame Retardancy

New Concepts in Polymer Science

S.M. Lomakin and G.E. Zaikov

The negative environmental impact of some industrial flame retardantscontaining halogens, heavy metals, etc. has kindled the investigationinto new opportunities of polymer flame retardation with a view toecological protection. This new title in the book series NewConcepts in Polymer Science deals with the ecological aspects ofpolymer flame retardation. The book opens with an introduction, describing the ecological concern of flame retardation applications. This is followed by some general concepts of polymer combustion.Subsequent chapters deal with the most important methods forestimating polymer flammability, the mode of action of modern flameretardants, ecological concerns of the most used halogenated flameretardants. The final chapter contains suggestions for and studies ofnew, ecologically friendly types of flame retardants, such as lowmelting glass systems, polymer nanocomposites, polymer blends, organic char formers, and silicon-inorganic systems.

This book will be of value and interest to chemists working on thedevelopment of non-flammable or low flammable polymers in academiaand industry.
