Festschrift in Honor of
Dr. Edwin P. Plueddemann
Editor: K.L. Mittal
This book documents the proceedings of the symposium onSilanes and Other Coupling Agents held in honor of Dr. EdwinP. Plueddemann, in Midland, Michigan, April 3--5, 1991. Dr. Plueddemannpioneered the development of silanes and worked in this field for manydecades. The contributions to this symposium were by invitation only andthe articles have previously been published in four special issues ofthe VSP publication Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology.
The book opens with a summary of the professional and personal life ofDr. Plueddemann. The remaining 37 papers are divided into four parts. The topics covered include: Reminiscing on silane coupling agents (byDr. Plueddemann himself); silanes as adhesion promoters; stability ofsilanes in aqueous solution, and the methods to improve the performanceof silanecoupling agents; kinetics of hydrolysis and condensation of silanes;adsorption of silanes studied by XPS, IETS, FT-IR; characterization of silanes byTOFSIMS; acid-base characteristics of silane treated glass; plasmapolymerized organosilanes; applications of silanes in promotingadhesion, e.g. of polyimide coating and resist pattering layer, and incomposites; adhesively bondedjoints and bonding of dissimilar thermoset materials; and non-silanecoupling agents: zirconium based, zircoaluminates and metal alkoxides.
This book, containing the latest developments and commentries on currentresearch in the area of silanes and other coupling agents, will be ofvalue and interest to researchers working in this field.
